Question by G: What is the best smartphone with free wifi (WLAN) capabilities?
Hey everyone,

I’m looking for a good smartphone, specifically one with free reign to tap into any wireless hotspot and not have to pay for data. I’m currently in Canada, so any advice from fellow Canadians would be great.

I’ve been hearing good things about the blackberry 8820, but it’s not available yet in Canada and I’m leary about buying online from shady sources. I like having warranties and physical places to return if there’s a defect, so I’m not keen on ordering an unlocked 8820 online.

Other important features are an intuitive organizer/tasklist that I can sync up easily with my laptop, and internal GPS.

I’ve scoured the net but I’m not experienced enough with smartphones so I need all of your help!

By free I mean not getting charged for utilizing wi-fi to have data transferred when you’re accessing a hotspot– I’ve been reading that some wireless services charge you for that kind of “internet” capability, whereas I’m looking for simply the ability to connect to any wireless hotspot in range and use it based on their settings.

Hi,

I am not sure what you mean by Free. If you mean Free, as in you do not have to pay to enable WiFi – all phones that are Wifi capable do it for free in that sense.

If you mean Free, as in you do not have to pay to the hotspot you are trying to connect to – that isn’t really under control of a phone, but your local hot spot.

What do you think? Answer below!
