SMART-PHONE

A category of mobile device that provides advanced capabilities beyond a typical mobile phone. Smartphones run complete operating system software that provides a standardized interface and platform for application developers.

By the strict definition, smartphones are distinct from PDA-based devices running operating systems such as Palm OS or Windows Mobile for Pocket PCs. While PDA-based devices usually have a touch-screen for pen input, smartphones usually have a standard phone keypad for input.

Compared to standard phones, smartphones usually have larger displays and more powerful processors.

Applications written for a given smartphone platform can usually run on any smartphone with that platform, regardless of manufacturer. Compared to Java or BREW applications, native smartphone applications usually run faster and integrate more tightly with the phone’s features and user interface.

The two major smartphone platforms are Series 60 (by Nokia) and Windows Mobile for Smartphones (by Microsoft).

Phones that are not smartphones or PDA phones are called Feature Phones.

so i would say; yes, its a smartphone.

Question by surgerynurse: I am an RN in graduate school studying to become a Nurse Practitioner. I am in clinicals now.?
I am interested in purchasing a new PDA to assist me while in school and later in my practice after graduation. I am torn between the Palm TX handheld and the Hewlett Packard iPAQ hx2495. I already checked and both units have the medical software that I’d like to purchase as well. I am probably one of the last people on Earth who dosen’t own an ipod and I’d like the unit I choose to function as an mp3 player also. Does anyone own any of these and can share opinions with me? Or can anyone make another comparable recommendation? I am not interested in any of the smartphone/pda combo devices. Also, my price range is 200.00-600.00 dollars. Thanks guys!

I’ve got the Palm and I love it. I’ve found it to be very user friendly and versatile. I had some problems here a couple of months ago and had to contact tech support and they were great. My problem was quickly and easily solved. Overall, I’m very happy with my unit and don’t regret the purchase at all. Certainly can’t speak of the HP, they generally make good stuff too, but the palm, for me, has been great.
Good luck on school and your choice.
