Is this Sony’s first Windows Phone 7 handset?

UPDATE: It seems not
Is this Sony's first Windows Phone 7 handset?. Phones, Mobile phones, Sony, Sony Ericsson, Windows Phone, Windows Phone 7, MWC2012, Rumours 0

We last saw details about a Sony Windows Phone 7 handset in January and if new spy shots are to be believed, then the new Sony Windows Phone 7 handset will be a side slider. QWERTY Windows Phones are somewhat rare these days, with the majority being touchscreen only, but it is an area where Sony (Ericsson) has some experience.?

The new leaked images show the keyboard and rear of the device. It carries the Sony Ericsson name on the front and the logo on the rear, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t a future device. In recent weeks, we’ve seen the Xperia S with both Sony and Sony Ericsson branding, for example.

Sony Ericsson has a tendency to launch keyboard devices as “pro” models, assuming that only business types want a keyboard (see the Xperia Pro for example).

The displayed device isn’t too dissimilar to the Pro either, although we note that the keyboard is open, yet the Bing search page is still in portrait, so whether we’d see Windows Phone 7 reorienting to work perfectly in landscape is a different question.

Sony is expected to be launching a number of devices at Mobile World Congress 2012 in Barcelona next week and we’re expecting to see new Windows Phone 7 hardware too, so we’ll bring you all the details as we get them.

UPDATE: After further research, it appears that this isn’t a new device at all, it’s an old unreleased model doing the rounds, no doubt caught up in the excitement of next week’s Mobile World Congress. Thanks to all those who pointed it out.

Coming in spring
Panasonic Eluga Android smartphone: First details. Phones, Mobile phones, Panasonic Eluga, Android 0

The first details of the new Panasonic smartphone destined for Europe have been confirmed. It’s called the Eluga and will be coming in spring 2012.??

The new handset is waterproof and dustproof and uses a 4.3-inch high resolution 960 x 540 pixel display. We don’t have any mention yet from Panasonic if it will be an OLED screen as rumoured previously.

The phone is, rather predictably, going to be running Android and very lightweight at 103g. The handset is also able to transfer information instantly between phone and Panasonic televisions. You can swipe images or video through a Panasonic Android application seamlessly to a television. Internet connectivity can also be pushed from the phone to television using Panasonic’s “swipe” Smart Viera app. The idea is that you browse on phone and then share it with your screen using the Viera Smart 2.0 application.?

Details on the new phone are still extremely thin on the ground, but Panasonic has promised us that we will have some time to play with the phone later.?

We’ll bring you all the?details?on the Panasonic Eluga when we have them.

Waterproof goodness
Panasonic Eluga pictures and hands-on

Panasonic has been talking about bringing a smartphone to Europe for quite a while. Announced on Monday at the Panasonic Convention 2012 in Hamburg, the Panasonic Eluga is that phone. Pocket-lint has had some time to play with the new handset and from what we have seen, it looks pretty impressive.

The 4.3-inch 960 x 540-pixel?resolution?display is a particular highlight. It has impressive enough viewing angles, the touch response is good and the skin that Panasonic has put on Android is simple but very smart to look at.

The real treat though is the way the phone feels. At 103g it is lighter than a Galaxy S II and is incredibly thin, although we don’t have exact measurements for the handset yet. The design looks great and the matte black back gives the phone a very sturdy feel. All in all a very swish looking piece of kit and easily one of the most premium Android handsets we are to play with so far.

Despite the minimal design, Panasonic has managed to pack waterproofing and dustproof technology into the handset. We were shown calls being made from the phone underwater earlier on without any worrying looking signs appearing on the Eluga’s screen.?

Inside is a dual-core 1GHz processor but we have no specifics yet on who makes it or the rest of the handset’s SoC unfortunately. It definitely kept the handset ticking along quickly but things weren’t quite the speed levels of say the Galaxy S II or Motorola RAZR.

The phone we were given to play with was running Android 2.3.5 and not Ice Cream Sandwich irritatingly, although this could easily change closer to the handset’s launch.

The phone has an 8-megapixel camera on the back, complete with 1080p video recording. We did snap a few stills and they definitely seemed decent enough.

Still images from the phone, along with video and websites can be pushed to Panasonic Viera TVs using the Viera Smart 2.0 application. Dragging media to the top of the screen will push it to a nearby television using what a presume is DLNA. The application is also due to come to iOS, allowing those with Apple devices to also take advantage of the media sharing technology.

Android powered?
Panasonic smartphone coming to Europe this spring

Panasonic is set to announce a new smartphone for the European market. The Japanese electronics manufacturer laid out plans to extend its mobile phone business to Europe last year, but we have now had official confirmation of the first device.?

The company aims to enter into the western mobile phone market in a big way, hoping for 15 million smartphone sales by 2015. And although we don’t have many details on the new phone yet, what we can tell you is that Panasonic will be showing the smartphone off at midnight tonight.?

We also know that the new smartphone packs a 4.3-inch 960 x 540 OLED display and is described as “ultra-slim D shaped”. No word yet on operating system, but there are, of course, murmurs of Android and interestingly, NFC capability. We presume it will be a multi-core smartphone, but whether it is dual or quad remains to be seen.?

Check back in at 1AM CET (Midnight GMT) when we should have some hands-on time with the new phone.
